This week we are focusing on a coffee travel mug made from Ocean Prevented Plastic ™.

See below for details of this great offer.

I was reading an article on the world wildlife fund website about how long it takes plastic to degrade.

Plastic degrades into microplastics which then gets into the food chain and can’t easily be removed.

Some plastics degrade quite quickly whereas others can take much longer.

I always thought if it took longer to degrade that was worse but there is an argument to say that if it takes longer to degrade there is more chance it can be cleaned up.

Time to degrade

Plastic Bags – 20 years

Takeaway coffee cups – 30 years

Plastic straws – 200 years

Plastic bottles – 450 years

Plastic toothbrush – 500 years

Did you know?

32% of turtles have eaten plastic bags – they mistake them for jelly fish.

Every year 19-23 million tonnes of plastic finds its way in to oceans, lakes etc.

So what is being done about this?

One of the programmes to tackle this problem is Prevented Ocean Plastic programme ™

The Prevented Ocean Plastic programme exists to ensure that

  • Plastic is recycled before it reaches the ocean.
  • Recycling is carried out in an established, quality-controlled and traceable supply chain.

According to their website:

The Prevented Ocean Plastic Programme prevents over 1000 tonnes of plastic from entering the ocean every month, and has so far prevented over 2.5 billion plastic bottles from reaching the water.

They partner with collectors in Southeast Asia, paying a fair price for plastic waste recovered within 50km of coastlines or waterways that feed into the ocean.

More than $100,000 a day is put back into these local economies.

This collected plastic is sorted and processed into high-quality, recycled material.
